From September to November, this is the most beautiful season on the plateau: empty trails, low golden light, and almost everything stays open, without the summer crowds. The two highlights of the season: the deer rut and the larches
The deer rut, from 7 September to 5 October

The larches of the Calme forest and the Barrès wood turn gold. On foot from the resort, free.
10 things to do in and around Font-Romeu in autumn
1. The Museum without walls
Free · 1.2 km, on foot. More than forty monumental sculptures in the forest, between the resort and the Hermitage: the highest art gallery in Europe. Starts at the Casino steps, open all year.
2. Le Petit Canada
1 h · 3.5 km, flat · about 15 min by car. An easy loop along the Têt river, through the forest, with free-roaming horses and cows. Start from the dirt car park on the D618 towards Mont-Louis, next to the recycling centre. Free parking, ideal with children.
3. Lac des Bouillouses
Free · above 2,000 m · about 25 min. From 21 September the shuttle stops running: you drive up to the dam. The Carlit lakes loop takes 2 h 30 to 4 h on foot, +350 m. The road closes with the first snow. Checked in 2026.
4. Les Angles wildlife park
€17, child €15 · about 25 min. 37 hectares at 1,700 m: bears, bison, wolves, chamois. 1 h or 2 h trails. Open daily, 9 am-5 pm. Price to confirm on 04 68 04 17 20. Checked in 2026.
5. Dorres hot baths
€6, child €4 · about 20 min. Open-air pools carved into granite, sulphurous water at 38-41 °C facing the plateau. Daily, 9 am-7.30 pm. Swimsuit required, 20 to 30 min in the water is enough. Checked in 2026.
6. The Yellow Train
€1 on the first weekend of the month, €22.50 the rest of the time (−50% for ages 12-26) · station 3 km away. 63 km and 21 stations down to Villefranche-de-Conflent. The line is often closed in October: call before you go. Checked in 2026.
7. Mont-Louis citadel
€7.50, child €5 · about 15 min. Vauban's stronghold, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Guided tour including the Convicts' well and its squirrel-cage wheel. ID required, book the day before on 04 68 04 21 97. Checked in 2026.
8. The Sègre gorges
2 to 3 h · free · about 25 min. A deep gorge at low altitude, starting from Llo: the right choice when it snows on the ridges, walkable all autumn. Finish at the Llo baths (€11 to €18). Checked in 2026.
9. The Cerdanya museum
€7 · about 20 min. The rainy-day plan, in Sainte-Léocadie, in an 18th-century farmhouse. Until February, the Visa pour l'Image exhibition "Feeding the planet". Tuesday to Saturday, 2-5 pm, closed Sunday and Monday. Checked in 2026.
10. Biathlon with Myrtille Bègue

Good to know before you set off
- Lifts closed from late August to early December: you gain altitude on foot.
- Dark at 5.30 pm in early November: a 5-hour hike starting at 1 pm ends by headtorch.
- Winter tyres compulsory from 1 November to 31 March, even without snow (€135 fine).
- Call ahead: shops keep very short hours in October and November. Road conditions on inforoute66.fr.
